Women and Depression
The effects of depression in men and women vary greatly. Women are more prone to experiencing depression and the causes and patterns of depression are significantly different from depression in men.

- Withdrawal from friends and family
- Self blame
- Eating excessively
- Sleeping more
- Anxious, scared
- Avoid conflicts
Depression in women occur twice as much as it does in men. There are psychological and physiological factors that influence the higher rate among women. Women may be more susceptible to depression as a result of hormonal fluctuations that occur during and after pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. Stress also is a major factor that can lead to depression in women.
Women can reduce depression by making lifestyle changes:
- daily exercise
- participate in regular activities (even when you don’t feel like it)
- talk about what’s going on with loved ones you trust
Dealing with depression takes time and deliberate action. With these changes, little by little you will start feeling better.
